Ashley's Update

It's been awhile since I updated...so here it is!

I went to the Dr. yesterday and of course had to step on the scale and wasn't happy with what I saw.  It wasn't as nice to me as my scale at home it but maybe that's because I had all my clothes on and had to pee :)  That should be like 5 pounds right there haha.

I was doing good last week tracking food in MyFitnessPal but have to say I haven't done it yet this week :(  I  am excited that I have really picked up my running and on Monday and Tuesday mornings I ran around the lake, the whole way without stopping which is something I have never been able to do and didn't think I would ever be able to do so I'm really happy with that.  I think it's a little over 3 miles but I'm going to try to remember to wear my FitBit tomorrow to see if it can clock the miles for me to confirm :)  So for now I'll just focus on the positive.  This weekend we leave for AL to visit the parents so I know it will be a lot of food and wine but I'm bringing my running shoes so I can go out for a run!  Sarah and I have a 5k on the 18th and my Duathlon is on the 25th so let's hope I'm ready!  I went to spin this morning then ran a mile right after so here's to hoping that I can finish the race!

Hope everyone is doing well!!

  1. Just saw this in a blog post from Harley Pasternak (fitness guy) on People.com and thought how true!! It is totally the case for me! I spend lots of time working out but I really hate preping meals, or I'm good at the beginning of the week then run out of steam on meal prep by Wednesday even if they are easy to make!

Exercising or Healthy Eating: Study Shows It's Either/Or for American Adults
You don't need a formal study to tell you that there are only 24 hours in a day. How we use that time, however, is another story.

Using data collected from the American Time Use Survey, a U.S. Census Bureau assessment of how Americans spend their time, researchers analyzed a sample of 112,037 adults who had provided responses between 2003 and 2010, particularly focusing on time devoted to exercise and all activities related to food preparation.

Researchers found that time spent exercising and time spent preparing food tend to substitute for one another, rather than complementing one another. In other words, when there was an increase in the time taken to prepare a meal, there was a decrease in time spent on exercise and vice versa.

"There's only so much time in a day. As people try to meet their health goals, there's a possibility that spending time on one healthy behavior is going to come at the expense of the other," said Rachel Tumin, lead author of the study and a doctoral student in epidemiology in the Ohio State University's College of Public Health. "I think this highlights the need to always consider the trade-off between ideal and feasible time use for positive health behaviors."

So if this is the case, how can we carve out time to prepare a healthy meal and fit in physical activity? I obviously have my own biases when it comes to food preparation, which is to cook easy, simple meals in under five minutes. If you don't have five minutes, I suggest taking 60 seconds to blend at least one of your meals each day! 2. If you weigh yourself in the morning and then you went to the doctor later on in the day (and have eaten, are dressed, etc) there is def a 5 lb difference throughout the day!

When Pete starts to get back on track he used to take at least one week and not really go to the gym, maybe just a little, but just focus on getting his eating on track. Then after 1-2 weeks he would start up the gym hard. He felt that it was hard to just start both "full out" together, I get it!

Also, I downloaded an app called Strava, Pete has used it I havent yet. It tracks your runs and tells you how long you go, keeps track of it and compares times, etc. IF other people on the app do that same run it also shows you that
